Editor’s Note: Jim Dalrymple has been writing about Apple for more than 15 years. You can follow him on Twitter @jdalrymple and on his Web site at The Loop.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday introduced the iPad 2 at a special event in San Francisco, taking even more momentum away from its competitors.

I’ve had a lot of people in the last 24 hours tell me that the iPad 2 isn’t as revolutionary as the first generation device. Yes, that’s true. But not every device a company releases has to be or can be revolutionary.

Apple has released three revolutionary products in the last decade alone: iPod, iPhone and iPad. I really can’t think of any products from Apple’s competitors that fit in the revolutionary category in that same time period.

People also said that Apple wasn’t very forthcoming with the specs of the iPad 2. Again, that’s true, but there’s a good reason for that—nobody cares.

Well, some people care. Those of us who are geeks care about specs. However, have you ever noticed that when you sit with your non-geek friends and start listing off specs their eyes glaze over and they rest their chin in their hand.

That’s because they couldn’t care less.

The iPad 2 is no slouch either. It lost one-third of the thickness of the previous generation, and therefore it is one-third less than the size of the iPad competitors too. It also has new technologies like a gyro built-in that will launch another round of cool apps.

Yesterday’s iPad 2 announcement wasn’t about the geeks—it was about all the other people who will buy an iPad. What those people want to know is “what can I do with it?”

If it fits into their lifestyle, most people are good with that. Apple showed many ways how the iPad 2 can fit into your lifestyle.

From the very beginning, Apple was very smart with how it marketed the iPad. The first thing it did was get the device into businesses and promote the fact that it could be used to get work done. And it was quite successful with that.

In an analyst call in October 2010, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the iPad was already being used in 65 percent of Fortune 100 companies. That was four months ago and the iPad has grown since then, so we can only imagine where that number is now.

This strategy allowed Apple to do two things. If it came out with the iPad and pushed the gaming capabilities of the device, the business world would have looked at it as a toy. That would have certainly meant slower adoption. It also allowed them to work on some consumer software, two of which we saw yesterday.

In addition to the iPad 2, Jobs also unveiled iMovie and GarageBand for the iPad. This is what people want to know about—what can I do with the iPad that’s exciting and new.

Obviously, creating movies and being able to edit and share them with friends and family is a very popular thing to do these days. iMovie makes that easy.

Creating music, whether a novice or pro is also a cool thing to do. GarageBand is a great app to get that done and you can move your projects to your Mac and continue working on them.

It’s not just about the hardware. Apple delivers the whole experience that nobody else can. Jobs said yesterday that there are 65,000 apps on its App Store specifically designed for the iPad. That’s a lot of things you can do.

If you think Apple’s competitors are jumping for joy because the iPad 2 isn’t revolutionary, I believe you are wrong. I think they’re scared. Yesterday, they figured out Apple’s strategy too, but a little too late.

For Apple, the mobile market is a cash cow. The company’s iPhone and iPad are proving to be the top mobile companions for people around the globe. Apple has sold over 100 million iPhones. Its iPad sales have hit 15 million. The company understands the mobile market and it knows how to capitalize on it.

But what about the living room? It has the Apple TV, sure, and the Mac mini is often times connected to an HDTV, but what else has Apple done to push the envelope in the living room? It still hasn’t launched the long-rumored television we keep hearing about, and it seems that offering a game console — a hope for many Apple fans over the past few years — won’t happen.

I fully realize that Apple can’t be everything to every customer. It delivers computers, smartphones, tablets, personal media players, two operating systems, wireless routers, and much more. But I also realize that Apple is an entertainment company. It’s about trying to give people more opportunity to enjoy their lives through technology. And it would only make sense if it doubled down on the living room.

Let’s turn our attention to the Apple TV for a minute.

Prior to its announcement in September, rumors were running rampant over what the former “hobby” would offer. Folks thought it would deliver gaming, interface with DVRs, include Apple’s App Store, and much more. They thought it would be a sizable update over its predecessor.

Instead, Apple offered a stripped-down alternative.

The second-generation Apple TV comes with the ability for users to stream Netflix content. It has Flickr and Internet radio. And it allows users to stream their music over their home network to their televisions. It offers movies and television shows, as well, but most would agree that it’s slim pickings for now.

At that event in September, Steve Jobs said that Apple’s research showed customers didn’t want everything a company could pile into a device. They simply want the ability to consume the content they enjoy without the fuss that might come along with something like Google TV-based devices.

But by delivering the bare minimum, Apple did itself no favors. The company took the easy way out and pretended like it no longer views the living room as a hobby. The only issue is, the Apple TV is still a hobby. It’s a device that lacks all the functionality we’ve come to expect from Apple — a company that typically prides itself on offering the best value for the cash. And at least so far, it leaves me wanting more.

So, what am I looking for? I want to see Apple improve the Apple TV by bringing its App Store to the platform. I’d also like to see some kind of gaming component come to the device, either through the App Store or as part of a more-capable platform.

And perhaps most importantly, I’d like to see Apple think beyond its set-top box and deliver products that try something new. I’m not sold on the possibility of Apple offering a groundbreaking television, but if it can surprise me, I’m all for it.

Simply put, I’m looking for Apple to be Apple. Right now, it’s just like every other company in the living room; it’s content to have a presence but not dominate.

That needs to end.

No single company can stake claim to the living room right now. Steve Jobs just needs to take advantage of that void and do something special.

But first, he needs to take the living room — and its revenue potential — seriously.

Resources

  • PT Sans Bold – FontSquirrel

  • Free App Icons for Developers – WebAppers

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document that is 1200 x 1200 pixels, 72 dpi, and RGB Color. Fill the layer with white. (Ctrl+Backspace or Delete)

Step 2

Now create a rectangle for the header and fill it with a white-grey color, then use the colors on the image for the “Gradient Overlay”. Our search and logo will eventually be part of the header.

Step 3

Create a new rectangle above the previous one, with attributes as shown below. The following drop shadow effect creates a look of a 1 pixel stroke which does increase the look of that simple bar. Note: this step creates a horizontal line.

Step 4

Now add the “Gradient Overlay” layer style with the hex codes indicated.

Step 5

Add a white 1 pixel stroke. The following stroke of 1 pixel will divide the grey shadow effect. It’ll eventually work as a divider.

Step 6

Make one more rectangle in the middle-right zone, and fill it with white and add a 1 px stroke as indicated – it will be our search box.

Step 7

One more rectangle should be created and filled with blue. Set the inner shadow as indicated below, this will be our search button. This blue works great in combination with grey, white and light-grey. Blue will be the major contrasting color we use as we work through this template.

Step 8

Add the Gradient Overlay details to the button with the details from image.

Step 9

Add a 1 px stroke to the button with the color indicated. Take a look at the first and the final result of the button so you can see the difference all these details made.

Step 10

Now add this drop shadow effect for the text placed in the search box, using PT Sans Bold. This will be the final step in creating your search button. You may want to try other fonts, but the PT Sans Bold is really good for this small button.

Step 11

Make another fill under the header section, this will be the navigation area. Here we will place the navigation links of our template.

Step 12

Write your navigation links using a dark-grey color, then add a white “drop shadow” effect. The effect used for the navigation links is the same used for the search button.

Step 13

With 1px vertical line, make divisions between each links. The lines should be black and will really increase the beauty of the navigation area.

Step 14

Over the home section, make a fill with the blue and then add a Gradient Overlay style as indicated.

Step 15

Copy the Home link, this time color it white and add a drop shadow effect.

Step 16

Create a big, grey zone under the navigation, it should be about 30% of the layout. This will be the background for the featured area.

Step 17

Now create a big, white rectangle and add some shadow with the details shown. A big stock image, a big headline and some text with another great button will be added.

Step 18

Add a any dummy image you want to that featured area. Be sure it covers more than 80% of the area. The one I chose is from a stock website.

Step 19

Add some text to it, use the PT SANS Bold font and make the font big.

Step 20

The remaining area should be filled with grey, in it we’ll place some text. This is really a secondary area which describes the image, the services, the company itself, or whatever you’d like.

Step 21

Place some blue-colored text which will be the title of the information below. Use the details in the image for Drop Shadow style.

Step 22

Add some dummy text. This could be some important information or whatever you’d like.

Step 23

Create another grey area under the featured zone, where we will add some text and icons later. Add the details as stated on the image. Mostly, the icons will promote the services offered by the company behind the website.

Step 24

Continue by adding a Gradient Overlay style for the last rectangle we have created in the anterior steps.

Step 25

Now we are adding titles and icons, as well as some divisions. The icons can be found in the resource list at the beginning of the tutorial. Be sure to choose your icons and text thoughtfully.

Step 26

At the border of both zones, create a small circle and fill it with dark brown color. Add some inner shadow as stated on the image.

Step 27

Continue by adding a drop shadow layer style. It is another small detail, but it really makes that button zone minimalistic, nice-looking and well designed.

Step 28

To finish, add a Gradient Overlay effect.

Step 29

By using the Custom Shape Tool (U), create an arrow in both circles. Now add the details shown on the screenshot.

Step 30

Continue by adding some Color Overlay for the arrow. It should also be a blue color because otherwise, it will not fit the contrast and the colors used on the whole template.

Step 31

Add a video screenshot in the free space and place a title for it. For this template, I have used a simple screenshot of a YouTube widget.

Step 32

Add the text “Product Highlights” and “Case Studies.” Let the text under the “Product Highlights” be links so you could showcase some friends’ websites or resources you admire/promote.

Step 33

Finish it by creating another form for e-mails, place all kind of other information, and whatever you’d like.

Step 34

Don’t forget to make a relevant/small footer for our template. If you have paid attention, you should know how to create the same effect as below.

All done! If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to drop a comment. I hope you enjoyed this whole tutorial!

Google Declares War On Content Farms, What's Demand Media To Do?

from the the-markets-are-changing dept

Today we have a guest post from Chas Edwards, Chief Revenue Officer at Pixazza, who's been thinking quite a lot about various content-related business models lately, and wrote the following in response to the recent news of Google's algorithm change

Recently, Google announced changes to the PageRank algorithm that will affect nearly 12% of search results. According to their post at Googles blog, Matt Cutts and Amit Singhal say the changes are designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful.

Presumably this will have an enormous effect on content farms such as Demand Media and Yahoos Associated Content. So whats a content farmer to do?

A few days ago I wrote a post expressing my hope that content farms might grow up into something useful and generally less sucky. Maybe Ive been reading too many happy-ending fairytales to my daughters. But when I pull back from the actual content from Demand or Associated that makes its way to my search results (which is usually quite bad), I see a platform and platforms, theoretically, are things on which you can build something lame or something good. If the content farmers help individuals with knowledge find questions (search queries) that need answers (topics too niche for large or mid-sized publishers to cover), it seems plausible that some individuals might create useful content.

My argument, though, misses at least two important points, which Glenn Fleishman and Jeff Jarvis helped me think through.

From BuzzMachine:

Why do people write on Huffington Post? Because they can. Because they give a shit. Because they like the attention and conversation. Because they couldnt before. Why do they sing their songs on YouTube? Same reasons.

Jarviss argument is: When were doing work, we expect to get paid. When were doing something for the love of it, were motivated by passion and the opportunity to be heard. When were doing it for love, in other words, we often create value for free. Quality content is traded for distribution to an audience and for a chance be an authority.

In a Twitter exchange with Glenn Fleishman, he said The more you spend, the better content you get, up to a point. His site, Wi-Fi Net News, was one of the first 10 sites that teamed up with Federated Media back in 2005. So my question back to him was: But what about WFNN in the early days when the money wasnt great but the content was?

Aha. Its about ownership. Glenn is specifically referring to IP ownership (his words, his URL, his business), but theres a different kind of ownership too one that Jarvis is getting at. Im willing to contribute (to the best of my abilities) good content, free of charge, to Twitter, Quora or the Huffington Post even though I dont own the IP or the business. Im willing to do that because I do get to own the authority. Those platforms publish my by-line, picture and bio, so if someone out there thinks Im smart or funny, I own that goodness. Im not making money, but I get credit. I work hard to create value because, if Im successful, that content distributed on those platforms polishes my brand and my reputation.

Even if Demand Media keeps most of the money theyre making from their websites, they might dodge the Google bullet if they can improve content quality by giving their contributors a sense of ownership over what they create. And then they marry the handsome prince!

The recent $315-million acquisition of The Huffington Post and the $75-million or so spent on AOL’s Patch.com hyper-local platform aren’t the only big bets that the media company is making According to a cover story in the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter, the one-time web portal is also putting some big money down in Tinseltown, where CEO Tim Armstrong has been signing content deals with celebrities such as former supermodel Heidi Klum, singer Queen Latifah and the musical group The Jonas Brothers. In some ways, it appears AOL’s new “content farm” ambitions are designed in part to produce content that can be wrapped around big Hollywood brands. But can this strategy produce enough financial bang to make a difference to a fading giant like AOL?

In the case of Klum and Latifah, the deals with AOL involve websites and content produced by the stars’ production companies, but AOL is going to be helping generate content — including web-based video shows — and promoting the sites through its network as well. According to The Hollywood Reporter, these types of deals involve AOL putting up between $1 million and $10 million per project (some of which comes from advertisers that the company lines up). According to Hollywood sources quoted by the magazine, those kinds of dollars look pretty good compared to what cable networks can offer.

Armstrong suggests that some of the content for these sites will be generated by other parts of AOL, including its Demand Media-style Seed.com “content farm,” whose approach was described in a leaked memo recently entitled “The AOL Way.” The AOL chief executive told the magazine that “the system that we’ve been building — which the press has taken to calling a content farm — is simply a platform,” and gave an example where Klum might decide to produce a video about making jewelry, and the AOL platform could then generate information and other content about how jewelry is made. Armstrong made it clear that he thinks content is the future of the Internet:

The first phase of the Internet was about access, and I believe AOL was the biggest player in that phase. Then the next phase has really been about the platform, so you’ve seen Apple, Google and Facebook there. But the phase after this is going to be more of the Hollywood phase, where it’s about content, creativity and really putting a human face on the Internet.

In addition to using its content farm to generate material to wrap around these celebrity sites, AOL also used its own internal research to decide which celebrities to approach. According to The Hollywood Reporter piece, the company only took its “Planet Heidi” idea to the supermodel after its algorithmically-generated “quality score” showed that Klum was influential on topics like parenting, fashion and style — all of which appeal to the female demographic that Armstrong wants to focus AOL’s content on — and after Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble had signed on.

The big question, of course, is whether this Hollywood strategy is going to produce enough revenue to make a difference for AOL, a company that is still in fairly precarious financial shape: in the final quarter of last year, for example, revenue sank by 26 percent and advertising revenue fell by almost 30 percent.

As I’ve written before, AOL is like a train running down a track that is disintegrating rapidly underneath it. That track is the dial-up access business, which still produces gigantic amounts of revenue — close to 40 percent of the company’s total — but is declining at a rapid rate. What Armstrong is trying to do is to build new businesses that have the ability to generate similar kinds of revenue, which amounts to laying new tracks quickly enough that the train doesn’t go hurtling into an abyss. The launch of Patch was one such attempt, and the acquisition of The Huffington Post was another.

The purchase of Arianna Huffington’s content-aggregation business is part of the same strategy that has taken AOL into the celebrity circus of Hollywood. One of the things the web giant has lacked on the content side is identifiable personalities, and that is clearly something the Huffington Post founder brings to the table. Huffington’s site started as a collection of blogs written by famous people from various walks of life who were drawn together by their friendships with Huffington herself, and celebrities continue to make use of the site as a personal blogging platform when they have a cause they want to push.

Huffington, who is now in charge of all AOL’s editorial content, is also in charge of the Hollywood operation. All she has to do now is turn all those celebrity websites into cold hard cash for her new boss before AOL runs out of track.

Expect the service provider is going to be rising in your roofing. Actually, any kind of contractor who does not need to go up in your roof to evaluate the issue should be immediately reduced. Those who are serious about their work may either create a sketching of your roof's surface area as well as tag problem areas onto it because they undergo their assessment, or even they'll consider pictures or video clip of the surface area while they are available online for. This is an extremely important action, because it enables you to see exactly what the troubles are and know how they'll be fixed.

Estimate

DSC_3487_crop by otterpopjunkie

The next phase will be the written estimate. The contractor will take away his loan calculator and come up with a written estimation. Some companies will go out to their truck or even van as well as write up the actual suggestion, while some will crunch the amounts for the job prior to you. Once you're given the proposal, make sure that you comprehend exactly which products will be utilized, just how long the job will take and if you will find any additional or hidden costs that may arise throughout the repair from the roofing. The service provider will be able to solution all of these questions with ease as well as forewarn a person of any additional expenses that could be incurred if the roof's ethics be damaged within.

Once you have obtained several created estimations from roofers, evaluate exactly what each company or contractor would like to provide for that cost. Do not always low cost the greatest bid, simply because occasionally the greatest bet will actually function as the service provider who the task correctly. Additionally, be skeptical associated with prices for bids which are not nearly as expensive others. They might be using substandard products or be untruthful concerning the possibility of hidden expenses. Above all, believe in instincts and opt for the actual contractor who enables you to feel quite comfortable about handing more than your money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Wikileaks and also the Uyghur People

by henry upon December 20, This year
Henryk Szadziewski, Supervisor, Uyghur Human Rights Project

Whether it were actually in doubt, information acquired by the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, offers verified Chinese government fears over it's continued charge of the location it phone calls Xinjiang, which is also referred to as Eastern Turkestan. The actual leaked cables from Ough.Utes. diplomats demonstrate the actual degree to which Chinese language government bodies attempt to convince governments worldwide to consider it's stance upon problems impacting Uyghurs. The actual wires also show the U . s . States' issues and sights regarding the on going repressive measures in the area.

uyghur by sarvaz

Most illuminating of Chinese government stress are the cables directed to Chinese frustration, or the specter associated with Chinese language ire, over the release of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to 3rd countries. The Dec 29, 2008 cable television relates how Chinese Assistant Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi met with the U.S. Ambassador in order to China in order to tone of voice Beijing's strong opposition of launch to any kind of nation other than The far east, which when the U.Utes. do indeed accede for this ask for it would "avoid injury to bilateral relationships and also to cooperation ‘in important areas'". In addition, the Feb 2009 cable explains the way the Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the feasible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees as "an unfavorable behave toward us" along with a "slap in the face". The Ough.S. federal government stood firm within not really liberating the detainees in order to China illustrates the actual degree from the politicized character of the Chinese judicial program. Genuine concerns over terrorism tend to be easy to understand, however in the actual Ough.S. government's observe the detainees would most likely encounter torture as well as delivery when they came back to The far east

Chinese language government pressure in regard to the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't only put on the actual Ough.Utes. government, but additionally to Brand new Zealand along with a number of Western governments that were considering resettlement. Albania, Indonesia as well as Finland, as well as Eu member states all have the symptoms of borne the brunt of Chinese language government unhappiness. In the case of Germany, that was initially willing to think about two Uyghurs on purely humanitarian reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances had been less preferable to other detainees due to the negative effects accepting Uyghurs might have on relations along with China. A May 8, 2009 cable applies how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer documented which Indonesia had knowledgeable The far east from the U.Utes. ask for to simply accept a few Uighur detainees held at Guantánamo coupled with been subsequently cautioned through The far east of ‘a heavy load on bilateral relations' in the event that Germany had been to accept any detainees".

The actual diplomatic cables also discuss the unrest within Urumchi, the local capital, in This summer '09. A July Thirteen, '09 cable talking about mass incidents in The far east says:

"Ethnic riots like those who work in Xinjiang July 5-7 as well as in Tibet within 03 associated with 08 vary markedly in source as well as character through mass occurrences, XXXXXXXXXXXX stressed to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each existing serious trouble for the Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, but the Celebration management would not hesitate to spread out fireplace on Uighurs or Tibetans when they deemed it necessary to recover order. Mass occurrences pose a different type of threat, he explained, since the management is actually ‘afraid' to fire upon Han rioters for fear of causing massive open public outrage that would turn from the Party."

This can be a relaxing viewpoint, especially when 1 considers the evidence presented by 50 percent reports released this year by the Uyghur Individual Rights Task (UHRP) and Amnesty International that fine detail eyewitness company accounts of the use of deadly live fire towards Uyghur protestors in This summer 2009. In addition, the actual observation that fireplace would not be used towards Han Chinese protestors has resonances for that various approach taken by Chinese language security causes in Urumchi to Han Chinese protests within Sept '09. Throughout those protests, then Celebration Assistant, Wang Lequan, tackled protesters, that experienced required that he let them know about government responses in order to security issues. An identical request to satisfy with the Party Secretary through Uyghur demonstrators in July wasn't fulfilled.

The broader repercussions of the unrest also noticed a short discussion about the effect it would have on Iran-China relations, as well as on relationships with Australia after World Uyghur Our elected representatives President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke at the National Press Membership in Canberra in August '09. Within the second option case, the Chinese government "privately warn[ed] a major Australian financial institution that vendors the National Press Membership to use its influence to bar a Kadeer speech there".

The U . s . States' issues concerning the situation within the Uyghur region are available via in the wires. In a discussion on policy direction in Tibet, Ough.S. authorities clarify that it'll end up being impossible with regard to Chinese language frontrunners to adopt a softer collection "if they look like doing so below international pressure". The cable television dated April Sixteen, 2008, one month following the outbreak of unrest in Tibetan regions, additionally relayed the observation "that domestic balance remains the leadership's top priority most of all, which means there'll ‘almost surely' be absolutely no rest of the current hard collection upon Tibet or in places like Xinjiang." The information included in the cable also storage sheds gentle on the severe sensitivity with which the Chinese government views territorial ethics, and the feasible drip over of unrest through Tibet.

The prospect associated with methods to tensions in Tibet as well as Xinjiang arising from municipal society are debated in a Feb 24, 08 cable. While recommending which China's financial achievement increases its resistance to democratic reform, the cable additionally discusses exactly how Chinese language leaders begin to see the effectiveness of "a restricted growth of municipal society, such as enhancements within the guideline of law along with a more powerful part with regard to approved religions, NGOs, non profit organizations along with other stars within places which contribute to social balance and don't challenge Communist Party rule." This is a notable alternation in considering, which has seen U.S. authorities promote the notion that Chinese economic improvement, and financial relationships along with The far east will bring in regards to a progressively democratic culture; however, much more faith appears to be placed in the grassroots motion compared to one that starts from the top quantity of a Chinese federal government. Nonetheless, the cable concludes which "[i]n areas such as Tibet as well as Xinjiang, driving a car of separatism results in tight limitations about the development of municipal society." This method can be regarded as counter-productive through the official, who suggests that the Ough.S. government "should still express...serious concerns over Beijing's individual privileges report as well as attract China's growing consciousness that higher respect with regard to individual rights, religious freedom and the rule associated with law will serve to advertise the improvement as well as social stability which The far east looks for as well as to enhance China's international picture." This type of strategy might take substantial diplomatic skills considering "China's paranoid fear that the United States privately encourages regime change and ‘separatists' in Taiwan, Tibet as well as Xinjiang".

The wires offer understanding of the every day company of diplomacy that is hardly ever owned by the general public, which is interesting to note the quantity of function carried out behind closed doors on Uyghur problems. The significance of the actual role of the United States as a monitor of Uyghur human rights conditions in private discussions is created clear, and contrasts using its tactful open public position. The staff from the Uyghur Individual Rights Project is comfortable with the pressure china federal government puts upon Uyghur activists; still, the details of Chinese language government pressure upon its counterparts is actually illustrative of the degree which Chinese language authorities make an effort to suppress contradictory stories. With more facts in the future from Wikileaks, issues more than Uyghurs may not get the headlines, however the cables possess shed brand new gentle on the documentation associated with human rights conditions in the Uyghur region.

Portraits of Uyghurs

In the middle of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the north-west part of China, the province of Xinjiang is a least populated province while it covers close to a sixth from the country's area. Having resisted during generations the Han Chinese control, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, or Old East Turkestan, fell into under the Chinese Han domination in 1949. From then, its population is generally Uyghur People and Turkish - speaking System.

Islamic primarily, the Uyghur people have a very good religious identification which, in specific, allowed them to protect a solid big difference towards the Chinese invader. Without a doubt, the Uyghur Empire of Mongolia knew a amazing civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

While in their history, the Uyghur People successively adopted Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before lastly changing to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., therefore opening the way to the Islamization of the whole Central Asia.

Under the influence of the religions which they taken, Uyghur People taken successively, and at times in a competing way, a large number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own graphic system.

Uyghur Alipbesi by Aptap

The coming of Islam was a great change because it was accompanied by the absorption of the Uyghur land in the enormous Turco-Mongolian and Muslim Kingdom. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan progressively replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used presently.

If their writing, their own language and their religion mark a real difference with the tradition of Chinese Han, the Uyghurs also are different from their aspect, so characteristic of Central Asia's people. A shiny skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features directing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek roots of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has included the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only nine million people - a little for this particular immense region. Thus, Uyghur people are now part of the fifty six ethnic minority groups having been well-known in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This particular statute allows them a few privileges in a land where their big difference is very often repressed. Thus, Uyghur families escape the "single child policy" and their language is accepted as the second official language in Xinjiang.

The integration of the Uyghur people and their culture in the People's Republic of China, however, appears quite illusory. The presence of all natural resources in Xinjiang, and its distance with nations acknowledged as sensitive, highly motivated the government to increase the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the higher responsibility work opportunities.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Saying more flexibility, but mainly the acceptance of their true identity, this movement was severely repressed by the power authorities in area Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The situations of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur population continues today to proudly keep their identification and their tradition , though they become a minority on their own territory.

To get more detailed information and facts about Uyghur people, you can visit a Uyghur website called Uyghur News at http://www.uyghurnews.com

Making Money Guide

Babies are big business. Nobody wants to be a bad parent, so there is great pressure to be sure you have not just the essentials, but the best essentials for your new baby. If you're a first-time parent, you have no experience to guide you. The helpful salesperson at the local Baby-Mega-Super-Store will be more than happy to provide you with a mile-long list of what, you're assured, are really and truly the essentials.

Well, I'm here to tell you different.

My fourth child is scheduled to make her appearance in just a couple of months. My oldest child is not yet five years old. For the last several years of my life, I've been a card-carrying, dues-paid, full-fledged member of the baby club. Many of those "essentials" you see for sale just turn into extraneous stuff that you have to keep cleaning, moving, and, at times, paying for. Save yourself some money and space, and stock up only on what you'll actually use. Here's my list of needs. (See also: Which Baby Products Are a Waste of Money?)

A Place to Sleep

A decent crib, a good mattress, and enough bedding to keep baby comfortable are essential. You don't, however, have to buy a crib new to get a good one. Search your local classifieds for a used crib; just make sure you get one that isn't more than five years old. It should be sturdy, with small spaces between the slats and all hardware intact. Most cribs that have been made within the last five years convert easily into toddler beds.

Salespeople at the Big Baby Box Store will scare you with talk of scoliosis and try to get you to buy the premium mattress for your crib. I bought the mid-grade; it's obviously firmer and nicer than the cheapest option, but it's also as firm and nice as I need it to be for peace of mind.

As far as what to put on the mattress, keep it simple. Bumper pads are not necessary and can even be a suffocation hazard. Same goes for big, fluffy comforters, pillows, stuffed animals, or piles of blankets. For the first six months or so, you'll want to have a mattress cover, five crib sheets (frequent spit-ups and diaper incidents make extras really nice to have around), and a couple of lightweight blankets. When the weather is cool, dress baby warmly so she won't get cold during nap time and night time.

A Place to Play

For the first several months of your baby's life, mobility won't be an option for him. This means, basically, that you can plop him down on a blanket, and he's not going anywhere. This also means that baby doesn't really need a swing, a bouncer, a play center, a play pen, a walker, a baby papasan, or any of the other play area options out there.

The caveat on this is when your baby does start to get mobile. Rolling, scooting, and then crawling will introduce a whole new world of possibilities. At that point, it's nice to have one or two confined play areas handy, so you can keep your baby entertained and safe while you need to do something else. But you don't need all the options.

Before you buy, test out what your friends have; go have a play date and put your baby in your friend's swing. If he's screaming in five minutes, don't spend $100 on a swing. If he's happy, it might be worth the investment. I've had the best response from my children with a very basic baby swing, a little reclined baby seat, and a Pack 'n Play that serves as a confined play area and can be moved to any room of the house, the yard, a friend's house, or Nana's house.

A Way to Travel

A safe car seat and a sturdy stroller are investments worth making for your new baby. You'll get the best deal on new items by purchasing a car seat/stroller combination; those will start at about $150 new and go up from there. The same advice applies to car seats and strollers as to cribs. If you're purchasing used, make sure the car seat/stroller isn't over five years old, and inspect it thoroughly to be sure it's in good condition.

The only other "travel" item I've used over the years is a front-pack baby carrier. I got a good brand, and it's lasted through heavy use with three babies. These seem to be mainly a matter of personal preference, however; if you can't picture yourself walking around with a baby strapped to your chest, don't buy one.

Clothes

Brand-new babies, prone to random bouts of spitting up and explosive diapers, can go through quite a few outfits in a day. Stock up on essentials that are comfortable for your baby and easy to get on and off: ruffles, ribbons, bows, zippers, buttons, and extra clothing "decor" tend to make the dressing process complicated and long (not fun when your baby is screaming), and, generally, the more "stuff" on an outfit, the less comfortable your baby will be in it.

As an IPO looms, Skype is looking for new revenue streams that will help continue its growth and improve its financial prospects. Monday, it unveiled the next big revenue generator: ads on its Skype Windows desktop client.

Skype said in a blog post Monday it will begin rolling out test ads in the U.S., U.K. and Germany this week from big brands including Groupon, Universal Pictures, and Visa. The ads, which will be adjusted over time, will appear in the home tab of the Skype client at the top of the application. In an attempt to preserve the user experience, the ads will be limited, so users will only see one brand a day. Skype said it won’t use pop-ups, but will try to target ads to users to make them relevant using non-personally identifiable demographic data. Users can opt-out of those targeted ads if they choose. Skype said it has already tested some ads with Rdio.

The move to advertising has been tossed around for a long time and actually seems a bit overdue. Skype said it is almost wholly reliant on SkypeOut revenue, which made up 86 percent of its $860 million in revenue last year, according to its updated S-1 filing. Skype knows it needs to diversify its revenue if it wants to grow and have the money to invest in new features, and it needs the money to keep Skype-to-Skype calls free. By tapping advertising as a new revenue stream, it can ease its over-reliance on SkypeOut, which the company identified as a risk factor.

Skype recently announced it has hit 29 million concurrent users, and said in its S-1 that its overall user base is up to 663 million. It has a lot of people communicating, increasingly through video, which makes up 42 percent of calls. It’s an expensive setup, but it’s also a great opportunity for advertising. Fortune last year reported that Skype could rake in $200 million from advertising, especially for video chats, which could host ads alongside the chat. Overall, Skype said its users made 207 billion minutes of Skype-to-Skype calls last year. All that engagement can be monetized well if done with some restraint.

That seems to be Skype’s main concern with advertising. The company said it is moving slowly because it believes the user experience is paramount. And it’s still not clear to Skype how big an opportunity it has on its hands. Here’s the important language from the S-1:

…it is still uncertain what level of revenues can be generated through advertising. Furthermore, we may face difficulty in successfully implementing advertising on certain platforms, such as mobile devices. Finally, our users may respond negatively to receiving advertisements through their Skype software client, which could negatively and materially affect user engagement, our Skype brand and our results of operations.

Skype said in addition to advertising, it will ramp up its enterprise efforts and is also looking at gaming and virtual goods as other potential revenue sources. The advertising effort is Windows-only for now, but if all goes well and Skype avoids an uproar, expect it to appear on Mac and mobile platform as well.

For all its success, Skype is still in need of some revenue diversification. It’s getting there with these ads, which should slowly beef up revenues. A rumored deal with Facebook to provide video chat could also provide some oomph with a boost of new users. Look for more announcements as the Skype money-making machine starts to crank into high gear.
